Breaking News: Nuclear Trained Operators Exempt From New Policy Allowing Hands in Pockets

All hands required to maintain professionalism

Naval Reactors was quick to walk back statements contained in a NAVADMIN published today which abolished the regulation against sailors placing their hands in their pockets, stressing that the rule change only applies to non-nuclear trained personnel. 

"Sailors are authorized to have hands in their pockets when doing so does not compromise safety nor prohibit the proper rendering of honors and courtesies," the NAVADMIN said.

Naval Reactors emphasized that all nuclear trained sailors in the engine room cannot place their hands in their pockets, citing reactor safety concerns:

 “Reactor protection analysis for naval nuclear cores has not been performed to account for nuclear operators placing their hands in their pockets. Therefore, reactor protection cannot be shown. Until further analysis has been completed, Naval Reactors maintains that all nuclear trained personnel standing nuclear watches are NOT authorized to place their hands in their pockets.”

At press time NAVSEA08 announced the award of a $2.5 Billion contract to Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corp to conduct analysis on operator curves when hands are placed in operator’s pockets.
